History [edit]

Formation and debut album (1996–1999) [edit]

After the breakup of his previous band, Kyuss, in 1995, Josh Homme briefly joined Screaming Trees every bit a touring guitarist,[4] before deciding to course a new band, Gamma Ray. In 1996 they released the eponymous Gamma Ray EP, featuring "Born to Hula" and "If Only Everything" (which would later on announced on their cocky-titled debut as "If Just"). The EP featured Matt Cameron of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, Van Conner from Screaming Trees, and percussionist Victor Indrizzo.[five]

Gamma Ray inverse their proper name in 1997 after the High german ability metal band Gamma Ray threatened to sue. The name "Queens of the Rock Age" came from a nickname given to Kyuss by their producer Chris Goss. Homme said of the proper name: "Kings would exist too manlike. The Kings of the Stone Historic period wear armor and accept axes and wrestle. The Queens of the Stone Age hang out with the Kings of the Stone Age's girlfriends when they wrestle ... Rock should exist heavy enough for the boys and sweet plenty for the girls. That manner everyone'due south happy and it'south more of a party. Kings of the Stone Age is as well lopsided."[6]

The first release under the Queens of the Stone Age proper noun was the song "xviii A.D.," released on the compilation album Fire One Upwardly! Music for Stoners which featured members of the Dutch stoner rock band Beaver. The ring's first live appearance was on November 20, 1997, at OK Hotel in Seattle, Washington, with Cameron on drums, Mike Johnson of Dinosaur Jr. on bass and John McBain of Monster Magnet on guitar. Homme played guitar and bass on the album (the latter credited to Homme'south change-ego Carlo Von Sexron), Alfredo Hernández on the drums, and several other contributions past Chris Goss and Hutch. Homme reportedly asked Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan to appear on the tape, just he was unable due to other commitments.[8]

Soon after the recording sessions were finished for the anthology, former Kyuss bassist Nick Oliveri joined the grouping, and touring commenced with a band consisting entirely of ex-Kyuss members. Guitarist Dave Catching joined shortly after. From this point forward, the band's line-up would change frequently; by the time their second album was being recorded, Hernández had left the group to play in other bands.[9]

2000'southward Rated R featured myriad musicians familiar with Homme and Oliveri'south work and "crew" of sorts: among others, drummers Nick Lucero and Factor Trautmann, guitarists Dave Catching, Brendon McNichol, and Chris Goss contributed, and even Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford, recording side by side door, stepped in for a invitee spot on "Feel Good Hit of the Summertime."[10]

The album garnered positive reviews and received a lot more than attention than their debut, despite the fact that the lyrics to "Feel Proficient Hit of the Summer" were deemed by mega-retailer Walmart to promote drug utilize, almost causing the record to get pulled from store shelves.[xi] The success of the record likewise earned the band notable opening slots with The Swell Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, Hole, and a identify at Ozzfest 2000.[ten] It was during this time that Homme stated:

At that place'southward a robotic element to our albums, like the repetition of riffs. Nosotros also wanted to do a record that had a lot of dynamic range. We wanted to prepare information technology upwards in this band and so we could play annihilation. Nosotros don't want to get roped in by our ain music. If anyone has a good vocal (regardless of way) nosotros should be able to play it.

Homme, interview with thefade.net[2]

During the 2001 Rock in Rio evidence, bassist Nick Oliveri was arrested after performing on stage naked, with only his bass guitar covering his genitals. Oliveri apologized to officials, saying that he did non know it was a crime in Brazil.[12]

Post-obit his work on Rated R, sometime Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan joined the band as a full-time fellow member, a position he held until early 2005.[13]

Towards the finish of the Rated R bout, the ring's performance at the 2001 Rock am Ring festival in Frg was, according to Homme, "the worst show we've ever played and information technology was in front of twoscore,000 people."[fourteen] The band decided to tattoo themselves with the outset of the performance, "Freitag 4:xv." As Oliveri explained:

Me, Mark [Lanegan], Josh [Homme] and Hutch, our soundman, have the same tattoo, information technology's from Rock am Ring festival. The time we had to play was four:15 in the afternoon and it was just a terrible show. It sucked, information technology was horrible. That's why I tattooed information technology on my ribs, where information technology would hurt, so I'd never forget.

This record was supposed to sound bizarre—like lightning in a bottle. We also were extremely fucked upward. It even sounds that way to me, like a crazy person. The radio interludes are supposed to be like the drive from L.A. to Joshua Tree, a drive that makes y'all feel like you lot're letting go—more David Lynch with every mile.

Homme, interview with jr.com[15]

Throughout its career, the ring has been described as culling rock, stoner rock,[93] alternative metal,[94] [95] difficult rock,[ane] and nu metal.[96] Homme has described the ring's cocky-titled debut album as driving music, athwart and recorded dry,[97] with the album featuring solid and repetitive riffs in its song structure.[two] Rolling Stone mag also noted a "connection between American meat-and-potatoes macho rock of the early 1970s, similar Blueish Cheer and Grand Funk Railroad, and the precision-timing drones in German language rock of the same catamenia."[98] The band'due south following album - Rated R - contained a wider variety of instruments, several recording guests and lead vocals shared past Homme, Oliveri and Lanegan.[98] Homme has also commented that "Our first record announced our sound. This ane added that nosotros're different and weird."[15] The band connected to experiment on their third album, Songs for the Deaf, which also featured a line-up including three pb vocalists, many guest appearances and broad range of instrumentation, including horn and string sections.[99] Homme has described Lullabies to Paralyze as a "dark" anthology, which includes imagery inspired by The Brothers Grimm folk and fairy tales.[100] In 2005, Homme explained, "Where the poetry seems to exist is when yous offset in the dark and reach for the light—that'southward what makes information technology not depressing to me..."[101] The anthology changed gears from the band'southward previous distinct "driving" sound, much due to the departure of longtime member Nick Oliveri.[15] The band almost exclusively used semi hollow body guitars during the making of the record.[102] With Era Vulgaris the band continued to develop their signature sound with more dance-oriented elements and electronic influences, while Homme has currently gone back to beingness the just lead vocalist in the band[103] and uses more than distinct vocal melodies.[104]

Homme has on numerous occasions described their music every bit "rock versions of electronic music," stating that he takes inspiration from the repetitive nature of electronic trance music forth with various forms of dance music, hip hop, trip hop and Krautrock. This heavy rock fashion mixed with the construction of electronic music has been dubbed by Homme as "robot rock" in an interview with KUNO-TV at the Roskilde Festival 2001.[ citation needed ]

Homme has described aspects of his distinctive guitar playing style.[105] He demonstrated the 'Josh Homme calibration', which he claimed was the effect of years playing and altering the blues calibration. The scale has the intervals 1, b3, 3, b5, 5, 6, b7. His scale is the half whole scale with the second degree (b2) omitted.[106] In the same interview Homme referenced some of his earlier influences on his playing, citing both polka guitar styles and the techniques of Jimi Hendrix.
